Where I’m confused trying to find a healthy diet

I’m still trying to figure out what’s a healthy, good diet to follow. It seems I’m not alone. Luther M. Siler was pretty honest in his own struggle with weight (which absolutely made me worry about him and, Luther, if you’re reading this, I hope you’re doing better) and the ever-growing visitors to my post on the pros and cons of a plant-based diet made me think there are more of us out there trying to figure out what’s a healthy diet.

Finding an answer seems as easy as finding ears on a snake.

So what’s a healthy diet? This article by lifehacker tries to explain why it’s just so difficult to find an answer. It seems every type of diet out there promises health, more energy and better sense of wellbeing. They also warn of dire consequences if you ignore their direction. Finding a solution that works seems an exercise in frustration.

So, what will I do? So far, I’m still hesitant to leave my veggies for good. They’ve sort of become my friends. But I’m going to try and start eating some animal protein and see what happens. If I see any amazing results or clear conclusions, I promise to let you know…but don’t hold your breath.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that, after talking to a friend, I decided to leave my plant-based diet a few weeks ago. I dropped it like a hot potato thinking I’d be able to switch without an issue. As it turns out, switching diets can have an impact on your digestive system. Mine threw a tantrum worthy of a two-year old and I literally ran back to my vegetables, fruits and legumes.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you that my week off from work is done and I’m heading back tomorrow. I’ve tried to explain this to my furry babies but I’m worried they have not understood and will be really upset tomorrow. We’ve been doing long walks and having snuggling sessions on a daily basis and they’re definitely going to miss that.

Where my dogs are confused

I have been pretty honest with my attempt at eating a plant-based diet. I rambled on about what I thought and what I liked and what I struggled with. I thought, if nothing else, it would be a positive influence on me and my eating habits.

I never thought it would affect my dogs.

So, lately, I’ve started to notice changes in our pooches. Like River taking up eating cucumber. He loves tasting what I eat and he is always curious when I’m messing around in the kitchen. It seemed pretty harmless to let him sniff a bit of a cucumber. I thought he’d nose it and leave it. To my surprise, not only did he eat it, he asked for more. Since then, cucumber has sort of become his thing. He loves the stuff. Of course, he still loves peanut butter, apples, chicken, bacon, salmon and other traditional dog treats, but there is no denying cucumber has a special place in his doggie heart.

Ocean thinks his fascination with the green vegetable is a bit of a joke. She absolutely hates cucumber and simply stares at me when I gave her a slice to try. Instead, her passion are blueberries. Especially if they’re frozen and mixed with her breakfast. She actually jumps onto her back legs and does a little dance when I open their bag.

But the most significant change came by only a few days ago. It was early morning (I mean early, these two do not understand the concept of sleeping in), I got up to let them gambol out joyously into the yard and stopped to watch them play. I stared, enjoying the sight of their bounces and runs about when I saw Ocean stopped, sniffed the grass and started to chew it. A moment later, River was following suit.

What?

It may be a bit early to predict dire trends but I’m pretty certain that, somehow, my eating habits have influenced my dogs and they’re turning…vegetarian. Since that day, I have been watching my fluffy duo and, sure enough, every day they run out there eager to get their first taste of the succulent green strands.

Maybe it’s time I have a little heart-to-heart with my furry doggies and explain that they are supposed to be carnivores. Before we see other changes.

My pros and cons of a plant-based diet

Almost 6 months into the plant-based diet, I have put together a little list of my pros and cons. I had some questions going in, like would it be more expensive? Would I have trouble adjusting? Can I still eat out? So, here’s what I found out, good and bad.

The Good Stuff:

  • It feels super healthy and good to eat this way. Every time I take a bite, I’m putting good stuff in my body and it feels like a pat on the back. Just goodness for my body over and over.

  • I feel better. My body feels better and I know my stomach and insides feel better too. That’s a huge bonus because I used to feel slightly sick or super-full after meals. I don’t anymore.

  • My taste buds have changed. It’s true. A silly green apple tastes like an incredible treat. I have no idea why or how but I love eating things that before were consumed only because they were good for me.

The Bad Stuff:

  • I can’t eat out. My hubby has been hounding me trying to get me to go out to restaurants but the truth is the only things that are vegan there are salads that contain two sad little ingredients. That’s not a meal and helping him by peeling large amounts of crab legs at a buffet is not my idea of a good time. We have managed to find ethnic restaurants that do cater more towards vegans but it’s still tough.

  • It’s more work. I used to eat whatever there was around the house not really giving what I put in my body any thought. Now, on Sunday I strategize the meals for the week and research what we’re going to eat in everything from breakfast to snacks. It’s work.

  • I do miss some things, like cheese and butter. It’s hard to have toast without butter and nothing vegan is close to melted cheese. Those things are tough to replace.

Overall:

I haven’t found it more expensive to eat this way. I thought it would be, but I forgot just how expensive meat and fish can be. So, financially, this hasn’t been a struggle.

As much as I love furry creatures, I didn’t do this for them. I did it because I thought it’d be better for my health. As it turns out, you can be a good, healthy vegan or an unhealthy one (fries and chips can be vegan friendly), so that’s not a great reason to continue.

So, will I continue? I go to have some blood work done this week and that will pretty much determine if I continue or not. If I find I’m deficient in some vitamins or supplements, I will change for my own health. But, right now, I’m still sticking with it.

Wanna cook something healthy?

So, lately, we’ve been giving a plant-based diet a go. In a burst of enthusiasm I decided I could cook and gave refried beans a shot. Under my leadership, we’ve had some catastrophes in the kitchen but this one worked. It’s really super easy and just requires patience. Leave it to cook on its own and it’ll be great.

As you can tell, I made enough for an army…still, it smells and tastes amazing and it only requires 3 ingredients! Plus, getting those beans in a bag cost under $2 for the recipe.
