Ode to excerpts

How I love excerpts. Let me count the ways,

1. They’re free. They require no financial commitment. No risk. You don’t have to pay a thing and yet, you get to sample. Awesome.

2. They’re small. No need to worry that it’s 500 pages and you don’t have to the time to read it. An excerpt is small, a couple of pages at most. It’ll take maybe a couple of minutes and you’re either hooked or not interested. Easy.

3. They’re fun. I hesitate to try horror or drama, but in an excerpt, I’ll try anything. Anything. Yes, even a cooking book.

4. They’re usually really, really good! The author picks a piece that’s tasty and interesting. Either we’re about to meet the hero or they find out something terrifying or you laugh. In any case, the excerpt is a good piece of the pie, worth savouring.

5. I get to find a new author I love. Authors that I love to read are like precious jewels. I hound their sites waiting for their next release. I read and re-read their books over and over. I write their release dates on my agenda and wait impatiently for that next book. They’re a treasure and a girl can never have enough of them. If an excerpt can give me a new author to love, I’ll be over the moon.

News and upcoming

Just finished reading Julie James’ It happened One Wedding. Check out my review on my Goodreads sidebar!

I’ve also updated the links for editing on the editing page. The link is on the side under ‘resources for writers’.

I’ve also just finished reading ‘The Benevolence Archives‘ by Luther M. Siler and ‘The Pact‘ by Jodi Picoult. I’ll post my humble thoughts on those books tonight and tomorrow. I chose these books because they’re outside my usual genre (romance!) so I thought I’d stretch my tastebuds. Let me know what you think about the reviews or the books!

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

“”Been waiting to say that all night, have you?” she quipped.

“Trust me, it’s by far the most polite of all the things I’ve been waiting to say to you all night.””

Pg. 17 from It happened one wedding by Julie James.

Julie James

Julie James is awesome. She writes contemporary romance about heroines who work as lawyers. She’s so good, she makes me want to be a lawyer.

Her heroines are powerful, independent, working women who know their stuff and kick butt. They’re the contemporary version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer–for law. And her heroes are yummy, confident, successful, alpha-type guys. The resulting sparks make me want to re-read her books over and over. Ahhh, so good.

I’ve only just heard about her! About a year ago, I read one of her books and thought it was great. When I also loved the next two of hers, she jumped into my automatic-buy and has happily rested there ever since.

I just thought I’d mention her because–like me–she might not be in your radar. She has one book coming out May 6: It happened one Wedding…and you know I’ll be reading it the moment it’s out. It sounds absolutely awesome. Can’t wait!
