Recycle posts?

I ask this after reading this wonderful post on Hugh’s News and Views. I’ve never recycled a post thinking that I’d bore my readers. Then I read that post and thought, should I recycle one?

Hm…

Well, I did a little digging and found the most popular posts in this humble blog of mine.

This one: The Importance of Tags: for bloggers is the mother of all posts getting hits even now.

This one: The Amazing Abilities of Akitas, is one of my favourite rants…and apparently yours too.

What do you think? Is it a good idea to recycle old posts? Or should we stick to new material?

Taylor Grace in The Writing Process Blog Tour

Just today, I was selected for the writing process blog tour by Susanne Leist. I’ve never been on a blog tour…so this is pretty exciting! As far as I understand, I have to do these three things: Link to the blogger before, answer 4 questions, and nominate 3 bloggers to keep the hop going. Here are the bloggers I’m nominating:

1. Why do I write what I do?

I love romance. Short and sweet, it’s what I read and what I write. I particularly love historical, contemporary and paranormal romance. I write paranormal.

 

2. How does my writing process work?

It always starts with an idea–and don’t ask me where they come from. Then I almost immediately dismiss it. If it comes back, with a suggestion for how it’d work into a book, then I listen and write it down on a note. Eventually, I’ll flesh it out, consider characters and go from there. I tend to take one step forward, then two back. I find that I get a plot going, then think something is terrible and have to fix it. Start writing then find a scene doesn’t work and have to rewrite it. Until, little by little, the entire thing is written and I can edit.

3. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Hm…Little known fact about me, I have a university degree in math. I think it helps me see patterns and symmetry. I really like circular ideas too.

4. What am I working on at the moment?

I’m working on editing those nasty extra words and superfluous comas in Olivia’s Choice and first-editing on Amy’s Choice. I’m also chewing over an idea I have for the next book or two. I just have to make up my mind about where I want to go next.

To niche or not to niche your blog

When I started blogging, I looked around to see what the experts recommended and, time after time, they said to have a focus for my blog. Write about one topic. One. Have a niche for your blog and you’ll get an audience that knows what to expect and that will respect your blog.

So, I did. My blog focuses on writing, books and reading. That’s it…ahem. I do comment on my daily life from time to time and tell readers about my dogs and other funny bits, but the majority of my posts are on topic. I try to follow their advice but, now, after a while, I started wondering…is that good advice?

Here‘s a post by Jessica Lawlor who argues against the ‘experts’ and leaves her blog unfocused.

What do you think? Is that a necessity for a blog? Do you as a reader turn away if you find a post that’s not on topic? Is that too rigid? Do you follow that idea with your own blog or are you more relaxed about it?

Why I love having a blog

Here are my top reasons for having a blog:

7. It helps keep me aware of what’s going on in publishing and writing. Nothing like reading other blogs to know what’s going on.

6. It helps me write better. Posts, by definition are all written–especially for me who can’t take a picture to save my life. That means practice. And that means I become a better writer. Yeey!

5. I get to shout out my two cents about anything. There’s something incredibly satisfying about shouting out my input to the world. I read about it on a blog or a post or a newspaper, chew it over and shout out my opinion on my blog.

4. I can connect with other writers or bloggers or readers. They know what this is like. They understand like few can. Their input and support is like a soothing balm that eases many pains.

3. I can help someone out. I’m just starting out as a blogger and a writer so I can’t pass on years of experience but I can warn others away from the mistakes I’ve already made and I can share what has worked for me.

2. I get followers who’ll leave a comment and/or a ‘like’. That positive feedback is amazing. It not only shuts up that nasty inner critic; it gives me an immediate way to judge how well written or how popular a post was.

1. It’s fun. Designing a header, making posts, putting pictures on line, reading other posts, it’s really, really fun.

Now, if you have a blog and are wondering about how to make it better…I can recommend this particular post. Not only is blog is highly recommended, the author runs a course on blogging that’s free. Free is my favourite price. 🙂

Many of us write well. Many of us also engage with really important or popular issues in our blog posts. Yet, some bloggers turn out more successful than others. How does that happen? What’s the big secret?

The most fundamental answer to this question about the big secret of writing a successful blog post is that there isn’t one. Readers know good content when they see it. They will not read anything that does not add value in some way (unless it’s your mother reading, of course!). So writers need to focus on quality first before anything else.

Yet, I’ve seen many great blogs that fail to engage the reader even with good content. “How does that happen?” I’ve asked myself many a time and have come up with the following cautionary points meant for good writers.
